FCPL Board and Administration

 

Board of Trustees

Library Board of Trustees consists of five members appointed by the Forsyth County Commissioners. The Library Board is a legal entity that has the authority to make policy and govern the affairs of the Library.

What the Library Board does:
- sets policy
- defines the purpose and direction of the Library
- demonstrates accountability to the community
- hires and evaluates the Director, to whom it delegates authority for the day-to-day operations of the Library

Director

The Library Board of Trustees delegates responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Library to the Library Director. A Library Director is the chief administrative officer of the Library. The Director is responsible for both day-to-day management of the Library and for assisting the Library Board with “big picture” issues like planning and policy-making.

What the Library Director is responsible for:
- preparing the budget for Library Board approval
- developing policies for Library Board approval
- overseeing the hiring and supervision of all other library staff
- overseeing the overall operations of the Library
- maintaining public relations in the community

Information Technology Department

The Information Technology Department strives to provide appropriate technology as it evolves and to maintain optimal functionality of existing computer hardware and systems. Information Technology staff often works behind the scenes to ensure that technology in the library is functioning properly. This department supports the technology needs of all of the other departments in the library. This includes working with staff in other departments to keep them informed about library technology and trained in the skills necessary to allow them to assist patrons in using public access computers and other computer-intensive library services, such as the Automated Telephone Renewal and Notification System.

Materials Services Department

The Materials Department of the Forsyth County Public Library provides the necessary services to acquire, catalog, and process all items in the collection. Staff members in this department handle over 23,000 items a year. Materials are selected according to the official Materials Management Policy and are responsive to the Forsyth County community. Patrons may request specific titles for purchase. Interlibrary Loan staff borrows items that are beyond the scope of the public library collection from libraries across the Southeast.

Planning and Facilities Department

The Planning and Facilities Department of the Forsyth County Public Library is responsible for providing long range planning for the library system as a whole. This department considers and submits construction plans for projects such as renovations, additions to existing branches, and the construction of additional branches.

The Planning and Facilities Department also provides facility maintenance for all of the library branches and headquarters as well as oversight for all construction projects as they come into fruition.

Public Services Department

The Public Services Department is the largest and most publicly visible department. This department provides the public face for the Library. Staff members in the Public Services Department interact with patrons on a daily basis. They are the smiling faces who check your books in and out, answer your questions, shelve the books, and provide programs for your children.

Support Services Department

The Support Services Department is responsible for the Library’s financial operations and Human Resource management . Key services in the financial area include accounting, budget management, financial recordkeeping and reporting, payroll, and purchasing. Key services in the human resources area include recruitment and hiring, employee benefits, recordkeeping and reporting, and compensation.
