Prepare Browser Mac IE

You will need to perform the following adjustments to optimize your browser for use with ForsythPL.Org and Premium Databases.  For most computer configurations, these setting adjustments will be adequate to get you started using ForsythPL.Org and the Premium Databases.  (Note: If you are using Virtual PC on the Mac, return to the Browser Preparation section of the Browser Optimization page and select the link to follow the settings instructions for Internet Explorer browsers in the Windows environment).

1. Enable Java

You will need to have Java software installed in order for certain areas of ForsythPL.Org and Premium Databases to function properly. (Note: Some personal firewalls also contain settings that block Java. Please refer to the manual for your firewall product if you encounter difficulties.)

a. Test for Java. See if you can load a java applet of this magic cube or this puzzle . We link to two applets because the sites are occasionally not available. If you can't link to one, try the other.

b. If you don't see the puzzle or the cube, you will need to download a Java update for Mac. For Mac OS 9 and earlier, you'll need to download and install the MRJ 2.5.2. For Mac OS X , you'll need to download and install Java 1.4.1 for Mac.

4. Disable Pop-Up Killers

While using Premium Databases, if you are unable to view some articles, view the GALILEO password, or open GALILEO databases, you may need to disable pop-up killers or ad-blockers on your system.

Pop-up killer applications work in the background while you browse the internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. Unfortunately, this can prevent some Premium Databases from performing properly.

To disable pop-up killers or ad-blockers:

a) Search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name and disable it. Examples of popular pop-up killer applications include:

  • Pop-Up Stopper
  • Pop-Up Defender
  • Pop-Up Zapper

b) Pop-up killing or ad-blocking functions are included in some anti-virus, internet security, personal firewall, and browser programs. Disable the relevant setting in the program. Examples include:

  • Norton Internet Security 2003
  • AOL 8.0

5. If Connecting to the Web Using a Proxy, Add ForsythPL.Org to Proxy Exceptions. *Note: An Internet Accelerator is a type of Proxy; however settings for those are usually handled through a separate program provided by your ISP.  If you are using an Internet Accelerator, please see your ISP instructions for temporarily disabling it or setting up an exception.
