You will need to perform the following
adjustments to optimize your browser for use with ForsythPL.Org and
Premium Databases. For most computer configurations, these setting
adjustments will be adequate to get you started using ForsythPL.Org
and the Premium Databases.
1. Enable Java
You will need to have Java software installed in order
for certain areas of ForsythPL.Org and Premium Databases to function
properly. (Note: Some personal firewalls also contain settings that
block Java. Please refer to the manual for your firewall product if you
encounter difficulties.)
a. Get Java. Go to the
Sun Java site, and
click Download Java Software. Follow the online instructions.
b. Verify that All Java Options are Enabled:

IE 4.0 through IE 6.5 on Windows operating
systems

- Select Tools then choose Internet
Options
- Select the Advanced
tab
- Scroll down to Microsoft
VM and check all three
options if not already checked.
- Click OK
- Close and re-open browser if you have
just checked an item labeled "(requires restart)".

IE 7 or 8 on Windows operating systems
|
- Select Tools, then choose Internet Options
- Select the Advanced tab
- Scroll down to Java (Sun) and check the Use Java... option if not already
checked.
- Click OK
- Close and re-open browser if you have just checked an item labeled

c. Set Java Security:

IE 4.0 through IE 6.5 on Windows operating
systems

- Select Tools then choose Internet
Options
- Select the Security tab
- Click the Custom Level button
- Scroll down to Microsoft VM |
Java Permissions and choose either Low, Medium
or High safety
- Click OK

IE 7 or 8 on Windows operating systems
|
- Select Tools, then choose Internet Options
- Select the Security tab
- Click the Custom Level button
- Scroll down to and enable Scripting of Java applets
- Click OK

2. Enable Cookies
You will need to enable cookies in order to log in to the Library Catalog
and Premium Databases. (Note:
Some personal firewalls also contain settings that block Cookies. Please
refer to the manual for your firewall product if you encounter
difficulties.)

IE 4.x
|
- Select View then choose Internet
Options
- Select the Advanced tab
- Scroll down to the Security section and
then find Cookies
- Select Always accept cookies
- Click OK

IE 5.x
|
- Select Tools then choose Internet
Options
- Select the Security tab
- Click the Custom Level button
- Scroll down to the Cookies section
- Set Allow cookies that are stored on your computer
to Enable
- Set Allow per-session cookies to
Enable
- Click OK

IE 6.x
|
- Select Tools then choose
Internet Options
- Select the Privacy tab
- Enable Cookies:
- If using a default setting, move the
slider to select any of the following privacy settings (to
avoid frequent prompts, choose the lowest setting
with which you are comfortable or adjust settings on a
per-site basis when prompted--or add them to "Trusted
Sites"):
- Medium High
- Medium
- Low
- Accept all cookies
- If using a custom setting:
- Click the Advanced button
- Select Override automatic cookie handling
- Select Always allow session cookies
- Click OK to return to the Privacy
Tab
- Click Apply then OK

- Select Tools, then choose Internet Options
- Select the Privacy tab
- Click the Advanced button
- Select Override automatic cookie handling
- Select Always allow session cookies
- Click OK to return to the Privacy Tab
- Click Apply, then OK

3. Set Browser Cache
|
IE 4.0 through IE 6.5 on Windows operating
systems

- Select Tools then choose Internet
Options
- Select the General tab
- Select Settings from Temporary Internet
Files
- Select the Automatically radio button
- Click OK

IE 7 or 8 on Windows operating systems
|
- Select Tools, then choose Internet Options
- Select the General tab
- Select Settings under Browsing history
- Select the Automatically radio button
- Set the Disk space to use between 50 and 250 MB,
as recommended by Microsoft.
- Click OK twice to close your settings dialog boxes.

4. If Connecting to the Web Using a Proxy, Add
ForsythPL.Org to Proxy Exceptions. *Note:
An Internet Accelerator is a type of Proxy; however settings for
those are usually handled through a separate program provided by your ISP.
If you are using an Internet Accelerator, please see your ISP instructions
for temporarily disabling it or setting up an exception.

IE 4.0 and higher
|
- Select Tools then choose Internet
Options
- Select the Connections
tab
- Click on LAN Settings
- Click on Advanced and type
http://*.forsythpl.org into the Exceptions box
(Note: If the Advanced box is grayed
out, you either do not have rights to change these settings or
are not using a proxy and can skip to step 5)
- Click OK three times to
back out of the menus

Install Plug-Ins
Return to the Browser
Optimization page and install any
Plug-Ins you may need.
