Summer Reading Help

Q. I'm ready to register my child[ren].  What do I need?
A. To register online, you’ll need your Library Card number and PIN. You will also need these two numbers each time you log in. You will need to provide information about the children: name, grade and school in fall 2009, library branch you use, and a reading goal.

Q. What's this about "Read-to-Me" or using one library card to register more than one child?
A. “Read-to-Me” was originally designed for groups, such as preschool classes, where one adult reads to several children and then records the books they’ve listened to, either individually or as a group. It can also be used for one adult to manage reading records for several children, whether the children are reading on their own OR being read to.

Q. What if I have a preschooler and an elementary-school child, and I want to register them together in one program.  Is that possible?
A. Yes, you can register both of them by choosing EITHER “Preschool” or “Elementary” in the “Sign up 2 or more…” drop-down box. During the sign-up process, you will be prompted to enter the school and grade your children will be in this fall. For the preschooler, you can select “P” for preschool and “NOT YET IN SCHOOL” for the school.

Q. I wanted to sign up two children for the Preschool or Elementary level, but I made a mistake and clicked on "I have entered all my 'Read-to-Me' Members" before I entered the second child.  What can I do?
A. Please contact the Library’s Information Staff for assistance during library open hours.

Q. Which Elementary Program Should I use?
A. That depends on 1) whether your elementary-aged children will be using their own library cards and 2) how many children you will register in any one program.
Example One: If you plan to register only one elementary-aged child, choose the program for that child’s grade this fall. You may use the child’s own library card or your card, but if you use your card 1) be sure to use the “alternate name” box to change the name used in the program and 2) you will not be able to use that card to register another child in the same program.
Example Two: If you want to register two or more children of elementary school age AND you want to use the same library card to register AND manage both of their reading records, choose the “Sign up 2 or more…” option and select the Elementary level of books. During the sign-up process, check the “Check if you will be reading to others” box. You MUST choose this option if you want to register two or more children in the same grade with the same library card. You can also sign each one up for his or her individual grade-level program.

Q. I've already registered one child for Summer Reading using my library card.  Why can't I sign up a second child for the same program?
A. Each library card number can be used only one time for each program, unless it is a “Read-to-Me” program and you have checked the box next to “Check if you will be reading to others.” Library staff can assist you with adding another child to a “Read-to-Me” program.

Q. What if I have children who are in the same grade in school?
A. You have several choices:

1. If each child has his or her own library card, they may use those to register and record their reading. They will need the card number and PIN to log in each time they record their reading.
2. You can use two different adult library cards to register two children—say, yours for one child and your spouse’s for the other.
3. You can register both children, and other children in your family, using one of the “Read-to-Me” programs (Use the “Sign up 2 or more…” option and select the level of books you are likely to read most often).

Q. How is the information about children's school and grade used?
A. After the conclusion of the Summer Reading program, the Forsyth County Public Library sends to each school’s principal and media specialist a list of that school’s students who participated in Summer Reading Fun. This gives school staff the opportunity, if they choose to, to recognize their students for participation in Summer Reading Fun. Names of the students are never released to any other parties.

Q. I’ve clicked on the reading program I want to register for. Nothing seems to happen.
A. The reading program registration pages open in a separate window, often called a “pop-up” window. If you have a pop-up blocker installed, it may be preventing the registration page from opening. In this example, you could allow pop-ups for the FCPL website by clicking on the pull-down arrow next to the pop-up icon on the Google toolbar (indicated by blue arrow) and select “Always allow pop-ups from www.forsythpl.org.”

Q. When does Summer Reading Fun end?
A. You can sign up for Summer Reading Fun through July 31, 2009. After July 31, you will no longer be able to register, but you can still record books through August 24, 2009. After August 24, 2009, you will no longer be able to enter books into your reading record.
