Did you know that pearls, known as the "queen of gemstones," comprised 75% of the Persian Gulf's exports by the end of the 19th century? Guest lecturer Dr. Victoria Hightower will broadly cover the Persian Gulf pearl trade through the 18th and 19th centuries, including the importance, extraction history, and legacy of this unique industry.

About Victoria Hightower

Dr. Victoria Hightower earned her Ph.D. in 2011 from Florida State University. Her research focuses on the pearl trade, history and heritage in the United Arab Emirates 1800-present. She teaches courses on world history, Middle East history, gender studies, and environmental history.
