This month's topic is "Political Thought Behind the U.S. Declaration of Independence," presented by Dr. TJ Liguori.
The Declaration of Independence provides brief but powerful statements of the conceptions of the natural rights of citizens, rule by the consent of the governed, and the right of rebellion in order to institute a more just government–all themes developed by Jefferson and allies principally from the political theory of John Locke. This discussion will highlight the development of these ideas and their embedding in the context of political thought in the later 18th century to show the development and manifestation of these conceptions in the Declaration, which have since reverberated globally.
