In this second Stories of Exile reading group discussion, we will explore the concepts of Identity and Belonging. We will discuss the short stories "A Friday in the Life of Sarah Zonabend" and "April 19th" from Chava Rosenfarb's In the Land of the Postscript and "Indian Uncle Sam" and "Holi Day in America" from Murali Kamma's Not Native.
Chava Rosenfarb was a Poland-born Jew and survivor of Auschwitz who later immigrated to Canada. Her short stories focus on the aftermath of the Holocaust, the lives of the survivors, and how they deal with the memories of their trauma. Murali Kamma is an immigrant from India, now living in Atlanta, and is the managing editor of Khabar magazine. The characters in his stories grapple with the "in-betweenness" they experience while shaping a cultural identity in their new world.
This program is for adults and high school-aged teens. Registration is required to receive the selected readings.
About the Stories of Exile series
This program is part of the "Stories of Exile" series sponsored by the Yiddish Book Center. The Yiddish Book Center’s “Stories of Exile” Reading Groups for Public Libraries is a reading and discussion program to engage teens and adults in thinking about experiences of displacement, migration, and diaspora. Using Yiddish literature as a portal, the program will feature works in translation that explore narratives which grapple with questions of homelands, journeys, identity, and belonging. Accompanying the reading groups will be informational lectures on subjects relating to the reading discussions.
The Yiddish Book Center’s “Stories of Exile” Reading Groups for Public Libraries is made possible by a gift from Sharon Karmazin.
