The FCPL Bookmobile is on the road! Visitors can come aboard and check out books and DVDs, access wi-fi, use a computer, and print documents. See the Outreach Events calendar to find a stop in a neighborhood near you.

The launch of the Bookmobile is a result of the library’s strategic plan and is intended to help the library reach its goal of serving the entire Forsyth County community. The Bookmobile lowers barriers to using public libraries by bringing books, technology, and resources to areas that are further away from the library’s physical locations.

FCPL invested approximately $400,000 in the Bookmobile vehicle, books and materials, and onboard computer equipment. Funding for the Bookmobile was provided by impact fees.

    • Yes! Patrons will check out and return items at the circulation desk on the Bookmobile.

    • Normal checkout periods are two weeks, but they may be adjusted based on the frequency of the scheduled stop on a particular route.

    • Fines will accrue on Bookmobile patron accounts, but may be waived under certain circumstances. Fines that are accrued on materials checked out on the Bookmobile due to schedule delays or cancellations will be waived.

    • Forsyth County includes about 250 square miles and FCPL’s first priority is to bring Bookmobile services into areas that are furthest away from an existing library branch.

The Bookmobile is expected to begin visiting housing authority locations, parks, food banks, and other locations, primarily in the northern part of Forsyth County. Additional locations, such as schools and community gathering places in the southern part of the county, are expected to be included in the Bookmobile’s routes in 2021.

    • FCPL works with Forsyth County Government, Forsyth County Schools, Forsyth County Parks & Recreation, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, local churches, food banks, housing authorities, and other charitable organizations to determine areas that are underserved by existing library branches, areas in which transportation options may be limited, and areas in which there is sufficient space to maneuver the Bookmobile safely.

    • The length and frequency of stops is still a work in progress. Outreach staff will evaluate the viability of each stop during the first several months of service. The schedule may be adjusted as we learn about demand and accessibility for each stop.

    • Yes, Outreach staff on the Bookmobile will present programs for patrons of all ages, though such programs will be on a smaller scale, outside (weather permitting), and socially distanced in the beginning. Outreach staff will also use the Bookmobile to distribute Grab and Go activity bags and share online programming.

    • Due to current COVID safety protocols, the initial schedule may involve longer stops with fewer people on board to allow us to serve as many patrons as possible. Weather permitting, some of the collection will be set up outside to accommodate more patrons. Due to the size of the vehicle and current COVID protocols, visitors should be advised:

      • Masks are required while inside the Bookmobile
      • No more than two patrons or one family group are allowed on the vehicle at a time
      • Patron visits are limited to 30 minutes
      • Computer time may be more limited on the Bookmobile than it would be in an existing library branch, depending on need
      • Hand sanitizer will be available for all patrons
      • The vehicle will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between stops
      • Weather permitting, all doors and windows will be open to provide adequate air circulation
    • Contact the Outreach team at 678-513-9354 or email outreach@forsythpl.org for more information.
