Astronomy 101 is a virtual program intended for adults with little to no experience in astronomy and for those who want to know more about the activity. This program will discuss necessary gear to bring, safety tips, top 10 tips from the expert, and recommendations on local sites that are great for beginners and local resources for astronomers or star gazers of all levels. This program will be presented by Mark Lancaster, an Instructional Specialist - Astronomy at the Fernbank Science Center.

Originally from South Carolina, Mark has lived in the Decatur area for most of his life, and is a graduate of Druid Hills High School. Mark has a BS from Georgia Tech and an MBA from Mercer University. He is a corporate transplant, having spent several years in corporate sales and marketing, and began teaching in 2005. Mark spent 11 years teaching at Druid Hills Middle School, where teaching Earth Science was always a passion. He joined the FSC staff in 2016. Mark served as an observatory assistant at Fernbank Science Center from his childhood through college, where he developed his deep love for Astronomy and Space Science. Mark officiates high school sports in his "spare" time (basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse), and enjoys most sports and outdoor activities.
